Job Title: Organist and Director of Music and The Arts
Position Overview
Plymouth Church United Church of Christ is a thriving, multicultural community of 420 members in Shaker Heights, Ohio. It is a Just Peace and Open & Affirming congregation that regards diversity as a strength and the blessed handiwork of God.
Plymouth Church United Church of Christ seeks an Organist and Director of Music and The Arts. This is a year-round, full-time position reporting to the Senior Minister. It includes health insurance, paid vacation, and other benefits including right of first refusal at all church rentals. Director will have the opportunity to receive regular support from a visiting Organ Scholar. Salary range: $60,000 to $75,000, commensurate with experience.
POSITION DETAILS
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Lead the congregation in worship from the organ and piano with hymns and service music, incorporating a regular diversity of styles and traditions.

Collaborate with the Pastors and other staff to create engaging worship services.

Coordinate with audio technicians when livestreaming.

Direct and accompany the Plymouth Choir (non-auditioned singers including several paid soloists); Direct the Plymouth Bell Choir. Both are typically in recess during summer months.

Shepherd additional opportunities for involvement of all ages in music ministry, including support for the monthly Sunday Choir and the Plymouth Folk Revival.

Provide vision and leadership to ArtsPlymouth, an endowed committee that organizes arts programming for the congregation and Greater Cleveland community.

Serve as a liaison to local arts organizations; oversee outside performances at the church.

Hire guest musicians and soloists, including substitute organists, for special services and staff absences throughout the year.

Serve as administrator of the music and arts ministry programs, including budget development and oversight. Meet regularly with the Worship Department, Church Council, and ArtsPlymouth.

Maintain church instruments which include: a Sanctuary 3-manual Renovated (2000) Holtkamp/Hemry Pipe Organ and a Chapel 2-manual Pipe Organ,[1] 3 pianos, carillon, five octave set of handbells, and three octave set of chimes.

Maintain church music libraries.

Ensure compliance with copyright restrictions and reporting for music used in worship.

Contribute written material for church news publications and worship bulletins.

REQUIREMENTS:

Master’s degree in choral conducting, organ performance, or related field.

Experience leading sacred music in a church setting.

Regular daytime, evening, and Sunday availability (one service), including worship on Christian holy days of Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, and Easter Sunday, with flexible scheduling.

Ability to read, write, and speak fluent English.

II.
Job Title: Sexton – Sunday & Evening Building Service
Report to: Facility Manager
SUMMARY
Performs a variety of duties with the primary focus on entry & security of the Church and its facilities and systems to ensure that the facilities are properly cared for and operate smoothly. The work focus will be in high traffic areas requiring regular cleaning and some maintenance.

Security/Safety

Open building by:

Properly disarming building alarm security system

Unlocking designated entry doors

Turn on building lights in Sanctuary, Chapel, hallways, conference rooms

Setting open interior doors for passage by service & event attendees

May support contract snow & ice removal services by operating snow blower as needed

Close building by

Closing interior doors

Turning off building lights in event areas

Locking/securing designated entry doors

Properly setting building alarm security system

Janitorial/Cleaning
-
Responsible for reactive cleaning within building during worship, concerts, other events

Maintain clean & supplied restrooms with building during worship, concert, other events

Remove waste and debris after events, as necessary
Other Duties
-
Move furniture and other heavy items as needed.

Greet and assist congregants/staff in general duties, providing customer service to all

Confirm proper room preparation and set-up for events and activities
-
Other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
This position has no direct supervision responsibilities.
Minimum Qualifications
Listed below are the qualifications required for this position and indicative of the knowledge, skills and abilities required to be successful in this position.
Education, Training and/or Experience

Minimum of three years work experience in similar professional positions

Experience in operating snow blowing tractor.

Experience operating burglar, fire, building alarm systems
-
High School Diploma required
-
Valid driver’s license required

Preferred Qualifications

Three (3) years or more experience working in similar position within a Church, University/College, hospitality, or event management company

Experience working in a historic building or facility
Physical Demands

Able to occasionally lift & carry items weighing 50 – 75 pounds, including furniture & equipment

Bending, stooping, shoveling, & climbing both installed ladders and step ladders, as needed

Able to use manual equipment for moving furniture & equipment, weighing approximately 75 – 100 pounds
