Lenten Devotional – March 27

By Betsy Kaufman

Hebrews 12:1-3

Sometimes it seems that life can be overwhelming:  so many unmet needs, not enough hours in the day or energy to accomplish all that is asked of us.  See more patients in less time-but maintain the highest quality of care. Be a patient teacher.  Apply for grant money and mentor more trainees in meaningful research. Get enough sleep, don’t get sick. Fulfill responsibilities to family and friends. Go to church. Volunteer. Say “yes”. There are so many truly good and meaningful goals to achieve.

When I read, “let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us”, I can see my work as an adventure on which God is leading me. “Lay aside every weight” helps me to put down any guilt/self-criticism about what I have left undone and, leaving that behind,  go forward in the moment to do the work at hand.   There will always be unmet needs. We must focus on the present task, engaging fully and giving our best effort, before moving on to the next event.

Lord, help us to “run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus…so that (we) may not grow weary or fainthearted.”  Help us to remember that we belong to you. You called us into being and you are with us on our race. Amen.
