This plaque erected by the Shaker Historical Society on September 13,1987,
marks the church as a historical site. It cannot tell the
whole story. The history of Plymouth Church lies in the archives,
in the memories of long time members, and is reflected in
the life of the church today as members worship, learn, and
serve the church, the community, and the world.

The first Sunday service in September of 1916 was held in a small chapel that
has been hauled from Lakewood (Ohio) where it had been used
by the Lakewood Congregational Church. This chapel was used
for only a short time. On September 27, 1916 church services
were held in the High School auditorium, the building we now
know as Woodbury Elementary School. The small chapel, some
years later, was moved to East 214 and Euclid (Ave. in Cleveland)
where it was used by the Euclid Congregational Church until
1951. It was then sold to the Assembly of God.

During World War I the church's land was used by neighbors as a vegetable garden.

The sanctuary as it appeared in 1923. Note the stair and
altar railings and the choir loft in the chancel. By 1946
it was realized that the church needed more space. An addition
was planned , funds raised, and in 1951 work began. The new
wings were dedicated on February 15, 1953. Construction and
related costs were $680,000. The debt was retired, two years
ahead of schedule, in the mid 60's. On December 20, 1964 a
new organ was installed. The Chancel was remodeled in order
to accommodate the choir; the choir loft was removed to make
room for 2,851 organ pipes.
The chancel after the installation of the Holtkamp organ in
1964. A more graceful, arched altar screen is used. Today
the building and changes that go on are done by the members
as they continue to use their church for the goals set by
the founders: worship, study, outreach, and fellowship.
