Advent Reflection, Saturday, December 8th

By Jim Riggs

Scripture: Luke 1: 26-45

As I was preparing for a choir rehearsal I was struck by this text, “Make your house fair as you are able, trim the hearth, and set the table.  People, look East, and sing today:   Love, the guest, is on the way.”  Yes, I had just spent the better part of a weekend getting the house decorated for Christmas.  By society standards I’m ready!  By spiritual standards; however,  I’m not ready at all.  That is why I need Advent.  I need this four week period to reflect, to sit in darkness, to search my heart, and to spiritually prepare to fully welcome this guest that is on the way.

This wonderful Besançon Carol, set to a text by Eleanor Farjeon, ends with the text, “Angels, announce with shouts of mirth Him who brings new life to earth.  Set every peak and valley humming with the word, the Lord is coming.  People, look East, and sing today:  Love, the Lord is on the way.”  This little child does come to bring us new life.  Are you ready or do you need Advent too?

I cannot begin to fathom what spiritual preparations Mary and Joseph made during their 9 months of Advent, preparing for the birth of their first “guest,” the Christ child, Jesus the Son of God.

Holy and loving God, help us to slow down and be quiet this Advent so we may spiritually prepare for the coming of your Son, Jesus Christ.
