Scriptures: Luke 9:1-6
Shhhhhh…. Sit still…. Pay attention…. phrases familiar to all of us from our childhood, and even used by many of us with our own little people. We don’t want them to miss” it”! If they aren’t paying attention” it“ will be here and gone in the blink of an eye.
Of course the “it” we don’t want to miss is Christmas. Not the shop-till-you-drop Christmas, but the Good News proclaimed in the birth of our Messiah. Advent, calls us to be quiet, to be still and to pay attention for what is coming; or else we will miss “it”. In the New Testament John the Baptist pointed Jesus out to the world. Now what could have been a more unbelievable revelation than a “wild preacher-man” dressed in furs subsisting on locust and honey proclaiming to the world that this other man, Jesus, born to a humble family who preached the Good News of loving one’s enemies is the prophesied King of the Jews. The one whose coming was promised by the prophets of the Old Testament. Like our role model, John the Baptist, we also need to pause in the business of our own lives, (after all John had his own ministry), be still and pay attention to the teachings of Jesus the Christ during this Advent Season , or else we’ll miss “it.”
Dear God of all Season’s, please help us to be still, really listen and pay attention as we prepare for the birth of your Son. Because if we don’t, the day after Christmas will be as empty as the boxes our gifts came it.
